Regular verbs in English are conjugated in the past tense ending in "ed". Although it seems to be a very simple rule, there are different patterns for adding the endings to the verb stem. Here are some of the most common patterns. (A) ENDS IN A LONG VOWEL + CONSONANT OR CONSONANTS Add the ed termination. (B) ENDS IN A SHORT VOWEL + CONSONANT Double the consonant and add the ed termination. PRESENT Play Delight PAST FORM Played ? PRESENT Chat Compel PAST FORM Chatted ?
