1 Joe Schallmoser Baseball experience –Sophomore baseball coach at Downers Grove North –17-plus years of coaching at high school and college levels –Associate Scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies –Coached in Instructional League for two years Physical Education Teacher for 10 years (8 at Avery Coonley) –Developmental appropriateness –Proper progression –Maximum participation Philosophy (my hopes) for 6 v. 6 Background – 6 v. 6 concept

2 Rules and Guidelines: Instructional – 6 v. 6 concept 5 innings or 55-minute time limit –no inning can start after 45 minutes 3 runs or 3 outs per at-bat –offensive team keeps track Coaches pitch to their own players –No strike outs –Keep the pitches coming 7 swings, then tee is up* –Consider the other 11 players Coaches of the defensive team ump –foul balls and safe/out calls Rotate players through all six positions 6 players in the field (no outfielders) –If short, play without a catcher –Do not wait for the catcher Pitcher wears a masked helmet Singles only until school is out Once school is out, runners can advance for an extra base (double) if the ball gets past the infield (any ball, anyway) –If it touches the grass, runners can go two bases

3 Key points Must buy in to DEVELOPMENTAL PHILOSOPHY Managers split team of 12 into two teams of six for each game –Must be evenly balanced (age and talent) –Must be different each game Changes manager’s pregame responsibilities –Used to have to rotate all 12 players –Now have to communicate teams in advance –If someone is missing, sub plays both halves –Make sure to rotate subs evenly Parent’s responsibility –Be available for either time slot –Do not make petty requests for time slots BENEFITS All kids are engaged and active Get all the “action” in in one hour Still learn important outfield skills –Also start to learn how to become a relay Base runners can find 2 nd base Last season’s stats for River Bandits –2 put outs and 1 assist made by outfielders

4 Number each player 1-12 (could even use jersey #’s) Alternate # by age and talent Set up a simple matrix that would indicate who would play each hour from day #1 Example: players 1-6 play first hour week #1, followed by 7-12 –Week #2 could be 4-9 first and 1,2,3,10,11,12 second –Week #3 could be odds first and even second If you are able to set it up early in the season, all you’ll have to do is send reminders before each game and get subs for player’s missing Additional thoughts for Managers
