8 The British Isles The British Isles consist of:
- two large islands – Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland) and Ireland (The Irish Republic, Northern Ireland) and more than 5000 smaller islands

9 The United Kingdom “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” consist of: The UK is a union of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Crown dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are largely self-governing with the UK responsible for their defence and international relations and are not part of the United Kingdom.

Great Britain is an island that consists of three somewhat autonomous regions that include England, Scotland, and Wales.

Henry Tudor – Welsh prince became King Henry VII. of England. Wales was united with England in 1536 under one Parliament – under Henry VIII. - Acts of Union 2. England + Scotland Scotland was dynastically united with England in 1603, when Elizabeth I. died without a heir and King of Scotland inherited the crown of England and became King James I. of England and Wales and King VI. of Scotland, Act of Union 1707 – The Parliaments of England, Scotlan, Wales - united

Ireland was conquered by Henry II. in 1171, but the first King of England who also took a title of King of Ireland was Henry VIII. in 1541 Act for the Union 1801 – established the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (in 1801 Ireland was united with Great Britain) 12

13 Union Jack The union of England, Scotland, and Ireland is symbolized by the British national flag, called the Union Jack – Union flag made up from the flag of: The Kingdom of England (St. George´s Cross) The Kingdom of Scotland (St. Andrew´s Cross) The kingdom of Ireland (St. Patrick´s Cross) 13 13

15 Saint George Saint George and Dragon
According to the Golden Legend, there lived a dragon in Sillene (Lybia) that poisoned all the countryside. People had to give it two sheep everyday. When it was not enough, they had to give it their child. One day, it was the king´s daughter. Saint Geogre kill the dragon – all people converted to Christianity.

16 Saint Patrick Saint Patrick and snakes, shamrocks
Legend - he banished snakes from Ireland. No snakes exist on the island today - but they never did (icy ocean waters). Snakes = evil in literature, "when Patrick drives the snakes out of Ireland, it is symbolically saying he drove the old, evil, pagan ways out of Ireland brought in a new age," three-leafed shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) 16

17 Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland
In 1922 Ireland was partitioned into two parts: 1. Northern Ireland (6 Protestant countries of Ulster) 2. The Irish Free State (The Irish Republic) – 26 Catholic countries of Ireland In 1922 – full title of United Kingdom (UK) was changed: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 17
