2 Advantages of using Terms of Reference
Terms of Reference may be referred to as “TOR” (acronym) TOR have many uses: States facts clearly for all stake holders Provides additional understanding between provider and client or user Support project team who know their duties Protects against liability/claims for damages Selling point – evokes trust and reliable tone Resolving disputes

Project – provides background and scope of project. Agree precise specification for the project Job Interviews – provides company information and expectations placed on candidate Responsibilities – staff appointed to different roles Sets out goals and objectives Sets out limitation of possible outcomes (scope) Definitions of key phrases Setting out any assumptions Setting out timescales

Document describing objectives, scope and purpose of a project, committee, meeting, etc.. There is no standard universal structure for a Terms of Reference document because situations vary in which TOR are used. Responsibility lies with the project manager to ensure all relevant and necessary issues are included in TOR. Where an organization oversees many projects/activities requiring Terms of Reference documents a house style for TOR formats may be used. Source:

6 Writing a TOR Be mindful of over simplification (missing out important elements) and over-complexity, or unnecessary work, which can arise from routinely applying a standard structure. There are no standard ways of writing it It may help to write numbered headings/paragraphs which can be referred to easily Use the BOSCARDET acronym for the headings Example:
