Secondary Industry DME 5 th May 2015 Find your name on the tables and take a seat

L.O: To complete a practical assignment on the location of secondary industries I am the Managing Director of LuffCorp, a company that sells the brand new GoLuffGo car in Luffland and I want to outsource the construction of car parts to another country. I want to build my own factory in that country and I need you to decide where will be best.

L.O: To complete a practical assignment on the location of secondary industries Each group has been on a fact finding mission to 5 different countries to find out which location would be best for me to build my factory. Each group needs to make a presentation about which country they think will be best for me to outsource the construction of car parts for GoLuffGo. You need to write a report to help me decide. You need to justify each point you make and how it will maximise my profits.

Hugoona Cheap resources in the northern region Problems in this area including water shortages and a poor electricity supply. Recently gained its independence from Luffland Speaks Gibberish, just like the Luffs. Long coastline with potential for ports. Long history of conflict between the north and south. Developed infrastructure in the south but only between the capital and the first 30kms inland. Well developed education system to end of Primary level Healthcare is developed in the cities but there are not many services in the rural villages. Cheap wages The government has recently put up tariffs to develop Hugonese industry. Monsoon climate HDI0.638 Life Expectancy at birth (years) 75.9 Mean years of schooling 5.5 GNI per capita $4,892

Bashia Imports resources from all over the world Small population but has many migrant workers. Concerns about human rights but denied by the government. Cheap taxes and good infrastructure with good ports/airports Wages are low but unreliable workforce. High level of healthcare and education but only for Bashians. Foreigners cannot use them. Bashia is far away from Luffland. Its neighbours are fairly poor and unstable countries. Recent news has concentrated on political movements trying to change the Bashian government. Tropical climate HDI0.722 Life Expectancy at birth (years) 74.4 Mean years of schooling 7.3 GNI per capita $13,364

Serit Neighbour to Hugoona but with a medium sized population Serit is more developed in education and health than Hugoona and has an average economy Weak government with corruption a major issue. Mediterranean climate The government offers lower taxes for the first 5 years of a TNC locating in Serit. Good ports but poor roads. Most resources available in Serit. Education is very academic. Labour costs are below average. HDI0.818 Life Expectancy at birth (years) 74.6 Mean years of schooling 11.3 GNI per capita $21,239

Rithenia Neighbours with Luffland but mountains block road links. High taxes on industry to protect the environment and certain criterias need to be met. Small but very well developed urban population with a good economy. Polar climate Very good social system. Skilled and educated workforce. In recent years the government has argued with Luffland over environmental issues. Good infrastructure that is paid for by tolls. Limited resources. General elections next year. HDI0.879 Life Expectancy at birth (years) 80.5 Mean years of schooling 13 GNI per capita $37,366

Weriyoot Good internet access. Good public services. Taxes are low in the country. Very good electricity and transport systems Temperate climate High taxes on TNC’s and MNC’s exporting goods Similar language to Luffland. Long history of international trade but not much experience in industry Limited resources but they could be imported if the tax is paid. There are some student groups working against government and many in Luffland are starting to support them. 10 L.O: To complete a practical assignment on the location of secondary industries You now have 15 minutes to answer the following question. “Where should I build my car parts construction factory and why?” Things you should know about me: I want to maximise profit for my company but I want to help develop trade links and the quality of life for other people. I am a social activist and believe in equal pay and equal rights I am also a conservationist but I do think people should come first.

L.O: To complete a practical assignment on the location of secondary industries

Now you need to help the governments of the other 5 countries decide what they should do to develop further. Look again at the resources and decide what you think would be the best form of development they should encourage. This could be any type of aid project or FDI through any type of trade industry. Remember the development should be: Suitable Sustain-able
