3. Introduction Ethics should be treated the same, whether it’s in traditional teaching, or teaching with technology. It is something that needs to be considered when creating assignments using technology. Items to consider are: Privacy Children’s Safety Teaching by Example Working ethical assignments into daily activities Asking children questions Teaching children to think about themselves and others

4. Definition of Ethics The word ethical or ethics means: To conform to acceptable standards The moral principles that govern a group or person’s behavior The moral correctness of specific conduct In 2008, there was a Code of Ethics published by AECT (Reiser & Dempsey, 2012): In this Code of Ethics, there is an explanation of how professionals in the field are required to maintain the highest standards of professional conduct. This Code of Ethics should be required reading for all teachers, so they understand exactly what is expected of them.

5. Ethical & Safety Considerations for Educators Some of the ethical and safety considerations educators must consider when developing web-based learning opportunities are: Privacy Educators need to understand the children they are teaching need to understand what to post and not post on the Internet. Children's Safety Children need to be aware of the dangers lurking online. They need to know not to post: Their full names School they attend City or state they live in

6. Teaching/Discussing Cyber Ethics Teach by Example (Kruger, 2003): Show students how to find software licenses Show students copyright symbols and explain what they mean Work cyber ethics into assignments and discussions (Kruger, 2003): While showing students resources on the Internet, show them where the copyright information is located on the page Explain how to cite their resources Show them how to get the information from the Title, Author, Publisher, etc

7. Teaching/Discussing Cyber Ethics Cont. Ask Questions: Ask if downloading songs from the Internet would be considered copyright information Ask if copying graphics/pictures without citing the source would be considered legal Ask them ethical questions (what’s right and wrong, why): Is posting gossip ethical? Is posting untruthful information about someone ethical? Is online bullying ethical? Teach them to think about themselves and others: How would I like it if these things were posted about me? Would posting this get me into trouble? Would posting this hurt someone’s feeling? What if someone posted this about my family, how would I feel?

8. Conclusion Whether teaching in a traditional setting or with technology, ethics should be considered as well as taught. Items considered and taught were: Privacy Children’s Safety Teaching by Example Working ethical assignments into daily activities Asking children questions Teaching children to think about themselves and others By considering these things, teacher can help instill ethical values in their students. This will help them to understand that their actions can have consequences.

9. Redesign The original MATLT activity was taken from two different assignment questions. The first was taken from EDU655: Trends & Issues Inst. Design & Tech. Online Learning, Week 1 Assignment The questions was, “Why do you suppose the latest AECT definition of educational technology includes the word "ethical" where prior definitions did not?” The second was from EDU651: Collaboration & Learning in a Virtual Environment, Week 1 Assignment The questions was,” What are some of the ethical and safety considerations educators must consider when developing web-based learning opportunities?” The original assignment questions were answered in paragraph/essay format. I took those questions and designed a PowerPoint lesson on ethics, to help teachers instill ethics into their students and how ethics apply when using technology inside the classroom.

10. Challenges The first challenge was locating information regarding ethics in my past assignments. As noted in the previous slide, there were only two questions that pertained to this topic. Another challenge was including ethical information that related to both the teachers and the student’s they teach. The last challenge was finding additional sources that could assist in providing enough information to teach a quick lesson regarding cyber ethics.
