2 ESL Program Guidelines  Entry based on assessments from DRPC (ESL Program) and Learning Centre (Visa Program)  Progress along a continuum  Tapered support  Promotion based on benchmark levels on standardized tests, on consistent success with current level coursework, and on evaluation on Ministry rubric  Support funded by the M.O.E. for up to 5 years

3 LATER TO LITERACY  For students having previously interrupted education  Introductory literacy skills  Basic survival English vocabulary and pronunciation  Cultural awareness and experiences  Sheltered class

4 BEGINNING ESL  For students who are acquiring basic communicative English skills and vocabulary for entry into academic classes  M.O.E. level: “ Emerging, ” reading level of less than 2.5 g.e.  Balance of speaking, listening, reading and writing  Up to 5 ESL classes: ESL English, ESL Writing, ESL Social Studies, ESL Science, and ESL Math

5 INTERMEDIATE ESL  For students progressing beyond communicative into academic language  M.O.E. levels “ Developing ” and “ Expanding, ” reading level from 2.5 to 5.0 g.e.  Speaking, listening, reading, and writing for academic purposes  Usually tapering from 5 to 3 ESL courses depending on needs (from ESL 2 to 3 in ESL English, ESL Writing, and ESL Social Studies)

6 TRANSITIONAL ESL  Practicing English language and academic skills in coursework parallel to the mainstream program  M.O.E. level “ Consolidating, ” Reading level up to 2 years within student ’ s actual grade level  3 courses maximum: Transitional English, English Language Centre Support, and Transitional Social Studies, often in tandem with mainstream English and Social Studies

7 INTEGRATION  For students who have demonstrated their potential for success in mainstream courses and on standardized tests  Full integration in 7 or 8 blocks of class time  Possibly 1 block of English Language Centre (E.L.C.) to support student ’ s work in mainstream classes

8 ESL PRE-EMPLOYMENT  Specially funded program  Referred by School Based Team  For students aged 16 or older who will not be able to graduate on an academic program by age 19 for a number of reasons  Provides literacy skills, basic academic skills, work skills and work experience
