DIVISION VOCABULARY ÷EGTA ÷ What is division? How can I use what I know about repeated subtraction, equal sharing, and forming equal groups to solve division problems? How can I use the array model to explain multiplication?

INVERSE Multiplication and division are opposite operations, so I can use multiplication to solve division problems. x EX. 12 ÷ 4 = 3 3x4=12

FACT FAMILY Is a set of related multiplication and division sentences using the same numbers. 2 8 16 What would the fact family be? Ex. 2x8=16 8x2=16 16 ÷ 2= 8 16 ÷ 8= 2

Let’s Practice Fact Families! 3 21 7 32 4 8

DIVIDEND The # that is being divided in a division problem. EX: 16 ÷ 8 = 2 16 is the dividend.

DIVISOR The # that divided the dividend. Ex. 16 ÷ 8 = 2 8 is the divisor.

QUOTIENT The answer to a division problem. Ex: 16 ÷ 8 = 2 2 is the quotient Look at my FACT FAMILY!

Use base-10 blocks to solve Rashid and Dylan had 28 marbles they wanted to split evenly. How many marbles would each boy get? The next slide will check/guide us.

Base 10 blocks Which number sentence does this diagram show?

Draw a picture & repeated subtraction 21÷7= 21-7=14-7=7-7=0 Mason had 21 baseball cards he wanted to share equally with 3 friends. How many cards would each friend receive?

Base 10 Blocks 28 ÷ 2=

Let’s use these word problems and base 10 blocks to show division. 1. There were 46 kids in the gymnastics club. The coaches needed the students to be in 2 teams. How many kids are on each team? 2. There were 63 kids in the gymnastics club. The coaches needed the students to be in 3 teams. How many kids are on each team?

Division with Arrays (click to cover pics) 12÷2= 15÷3= 20÷4=

Number Lines Let’s Practice. Draw a number line for 27 ÷ 9 =

Let’s review- Draw a picture, Repeated Subtraction, Base 10, Arrays, Number Line, & Inverse 15÷3= 21÷3= 49÷7=

There were 46 kids in the gymnastics club. The coaches needed the students to be in 2 teams. How many kids are on each team?

It costs 693 dollars to buy the digital camera Terry wants. If she makes equal payments for 3 months, how much would each payment be? Let’s try all these models with a harder problem!

Strip Diagrams A rancher has 84 horses that need to be put into corrals. If the rancher wants to put 6 horses in each corral, how many corrals are needed?

Long Division First let’s think about partial products. How did we show Partial Products with multiplication? Turn and Talk with your neighbor. How can we relate this to division? In partial-quotients division, it takes several steps to find the quotient. At each step, you find a partial answer (called a partial quotient); then you find the product of the partial quotient and divisor and subtract it from the dividend.

Partial Products

Use Partial Products to solve There were 64 kids in the gymnastics club. The coaches needed the students to be in 3 teams. How many kids are on each team?

Let’s try a harder problem with partial products! It costs 693 dollars to buy the digital camera Terry wants. If she makes equal payments for 3 months, how much would each payment be?

Long Division Dad Mom Sister Brother ÷ x -

Division Rap Divisor Dividend ÷ x # # # Divide Multiply Subtract Bring Down Dad Mother Sister Brother that is the sound The number on the outside it’s the divisor Divide into the dividend make yourself wiser The first thing you do is see how many times The divisor goes into the number under the line The amount goes above then multiply Subtract that amount and bring the next number down Divide the divisors into numbers below Put your answer up top that much is so Next multiply down like you did before. Subtract that amount and now there’s not much more. DMSB Quotient http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=sEp94gS

Use long division to solve There are 77 CDs by the stereo. John wants to put the same number on each shelf. There are 5 shelves. How many CDs will go on each shelf?

Long Division Mike earned 624 dollars working part-time at the gas station for 5 months. He earned the same amount each month. How much did he make each month?

Long Division A store has a total of 231 golf balls. There are 3 golf balls in a package. About how many packages of golf balls are there?

What can you tell about 627 ÷ 9 by just looking at the problem? What can you tell about 785 ÷ 5 by just looking at the problem?

Is 654 pounds of fish enough to feed 5 sea lions for 6 days?

Cassidy bought some shirts and pants for $214. She spent $60 on shirts. If Cassidy bought 7 pairs of pants for the same price each, how much was each pair of pants?

Estimating 77 ÷ 4 = 273 ÷ 3 = 291 ÷ 7 = www.showme.com/sh/?h=9syHmV6

STOP! Can Print and Do Triple Play or the Activity where they start solving and describing how they solve and then they stop and switch.

Angelina has 125 roses in her flower shop. About how many bougets of 6 roses can she make?

Kira has 513 beads. She has 213 glass beads. The rest are plastic beads. Kira has 6 colors of plastic beads, with the same number of each color. How many of each color plastic bead does Kira have?

Brianna spent $65 on necklaces and bracelets at a crafts fair. She spent $23 on bracelets and the rest on necklaces. If the necklaces all cost the same, and Brianna bought 3, how much did each necklace cost?

Candy bought $160 in equipment for her camping trip. She spent $95 on a cook stove and the rest on 5 freeze-dried food packs that each cost the same amount. Which two equations could you use to find the cost, f, of each food pack?

Kira has 513 beads. She has 213 glass beads. The rest are plastic beads. Kira has 6 colors of plastic beads, with the same number of each color. How many of each color plastic bead does Kira have?
