1 Year 6 – Autumn Term – 108 Years of the Davis’ Family
Literacy: We will learn the features , structure and layout of the following text types through reading and discussion: -narrative, poetry, play scripts, reports and journalistic writing. We will then plan, write and edit. After each unit our writing will be levelled and new targets will be set. Guided reading sessions will cover a range of text types and help us to understand texts read. Numeracy: We will be developing our understanding of place value by rounding and ordering 8 digit numbers and decimals. We will also be revising and extending our written methods for all four operations. In the unit of Shape we will be studying different types of angles and parts of circles. We will also be interpreting and constructing pie charts in Data Handling. Computing: We will be thinking about the reliability of information when researching and using a range of computer software when programming. Science: We will be learning about how light travels and allows us to see. We will also learn about the different parts of the eye and how these transmit the image to the brain. Later in the term we will be investigating various micro-organisms . We will observe the different characteristics and the environmental factors that these survive in. RE: We will compare the beliefs of Christianity and Judaism. We will explore origins, traditions, holy books, celebrations and ways of life for these two different religions. PSHE: We will be discussing, changes during ‘New Beginning’ and how we can deal with conflict in ‘Getting On and Falling Out’ Spanish: We will be asking and answering questions about different topics. We will play a range of games to repeat and reinforce new vocabulary we learn such as pets and family members. PE and Swimming: We will be developing skills in gymnastics by creating symmetrical and asymmetrical balances. We will develop synchronised routines with partners and small groups using counter balances, mirroring and matching movements.

Events: Foundation subjects: As Historians we will be studying family life from the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 to the end of World War 2 in During this period we will study significant turning points which led to changes in medicine and technology and changes in education and employment. As Geographers we will be using atlas and map skills to explore the British Empire and its role in the economic development during the 19th Century. We will also look at how European borders changes during the Second World War. As Designers we will be investigating, designing, making and evaluating a Victorian toy. For homework the children will be asked to design an Anderson Shelter. As Artists we will sketching and drawing portraits of Queen Victoria and Steam Trains. We will be using the drawings and paintings of World War 2 artists as a stimulus for work on colours and tones. As Musicians we will be learning about Great Composers from Medieval to Modern music and a bit of everything in between! We will use and apply skills learnt in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT throughout the topic. Trip - Colne Valley Railway During our visit to Colne Valley Railway we will become Victorians fro the day. We will experience life in a Victorian Schoolroom and participate in typical Victorian Pastimes. We will also get to meet the Queen herself on the Royal Steam Train. End of term presentation We will be setting up the classrooms as the Davis’ Family homes during the Victorian and World War 2 periods.
