1 Looking for that next great read? Browse Knox County Public Library’s OPAC (Online Public Access Computer) in the library or from your home computer. A presentation by Paula Smith Oct. 6, 2013

2 Step 1 To browse at the library, click the “ENTER” button to Step 2. To browse from home, click the “ENTER” button to Step 3.

3 Step 2 The OPAC home screen will look like this: Proceed to step 6

4 Step 3 Enter the library’s web address in your browser search bar and click the “ENTER” button. In this example, Mozilla Firefox was used. You can use other browsers, like Internet Explorer or Google Chrome. These are most commonly used. Mozilla Firefox Internet Explorer Google Chrome No matter which web browser is used, the search bar will always be in the top left of the screen.

5 Step 4 This is the library home screen. Move your cursor (moving arrow on the computer screen) to the “Catalog” tab. Select “View the Catalog” when it drops down from the tab. Proceed to Step 5.

6 Step 5 Except for the browser tabs, this is the same screen that is on the library’s OPAC computers. Proceed to Step 6

7 Step 6 To browse for your favorite author, click the down arrow next to “keyword”… …and select “Author.” Your screen will look like this: Click “ENTER” to proceed to Step 7

8 Step 7 Type in your favorite author’s name in the search box. Clive Cussler was used in this example. Remember to type the author’s last name first, then the first name. Click the “Submit” button. Hint: make sure the author’s name is spelled correctly. Proceed to Step 8

9 Step 8 Your screen will look like this: Use the scroll bar to move up and down the screen Use the icons to choose print books and books on CD Click “ENTER” to proceed to next slide

10 What’s that? This icon means the library item is a printed book. This icon means the library item is a book on CD. The book will be with the new fiction with a red “B&T” label on the spine The book will be in the main collection stacks Number used to identify books on CD. This is not used to find the item. To find an audiobook, look in the collection by author’s last name, like you would find a book. This item was leased from Baker and Taylor. This item is being shipped back and no longer available. However, a library copy may be available in the main stacks. Click “ENTER” to learn more

11 But I’ve read everything that author’s written. What now? Click on any title by your favorite author … Click “More Like This”… Click “ENTER” to proceed to next slide

12 …and the next screen will suggest books you might like Hint: results for “more like this” may be different for each title. For instance, the results for the book “Striker” will be different than the results for the book “Maya.”
