1 Subcommittee on Cultural and Demographic Data’s Address Data Content Standard Leslie Godwin presented to the Coordination Group for the Standards Working Group February 6, 2001 Consideration for public review

2 The Essence l An FGDC-endorsed standard that complements, not replaces, existing address standards. CONTENT l The purpose is to facilitate the successful sharing of addresses. Sharing requires two types of information -- Content information and Format information. This standard provides a method of documenting the CONTENT of address information by l Providing content documentation requirements. l Standardizing some commonly used discrete units of address information. l Standardizing terms and their definitions to alleviate inconsistencies and simplify the documentation process. l Acknowledges the importance of mailing addresses and provides a vehicle for crosswalking an address to US Postal Service address standards.

3 A Disclaimer * * (what it doesn’t do) l The standard –does not require that addresses be shared and does not provide guidelines for determining if they can be shared. –Does not standardize Format information (that second bit of information needed to share addresses). l Does not apply to electronic addresses.

4 Perceived Benefits l Encourages the exchange of address information. l Ensures that those desiring to exchange address information ‘speak a common language’ and can exchange information with a minimum of effort. l Complements, but does not replace, existing address standards. l Keeps it simple.

5 Development Process l Step 1 - SCDD submitted a standards proposal to the SWG in 1995. l Steps 2 – 5 of the FGDC Standards Process are completed by the SCDD between 1995 and 2000 –includes input and review by member agencies and presentations soliciting input at conferences. l Step 6 – SWG recommends approval for public review at their December 2000 meeting. l The SWG is requesting Coordination Group approval for public review at this time.

6 In Support of Public Review l The SCDD will ensure that the approximately 50 persons who have expressed interest in the Standard are notified of the public review. l The SCDD has assured the SWG it will respond to the 3 sets of comments submitted to the SWG during its approval process at the completion of public review. l The SCDD will respond to the 1 set of comments submitted to the Coordination Group at the completion of public review.
