7.10 Scientific Notation Objective: To use scientific notation. Warm – up: Express each number as a power of 10. 1)1002) 103) 1 4) 5)

7.10 Scientific Notation Why use Scientific Notation? o Some numbers are so large or so small that they are difficult to read a or write. o Diameter of the solar system: 118,000,000,000 km o Diameter of an atom of silver: 0.00000000000025 km o Scientific Notation makes it easier to work with these numbers. How to write Scientific Notation o All numbers written in Scientific Notation are the product of: o A number greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10 …AND… o A power of 10 o If the number is originally large, 10’s exponent is positive. o If the number is originally small, 10’s exponent is negative.

7.10 Scientific Notation Write each number in Scientific Notation. o 118,000,000,000 o 8,500,000,000,000 o 0.00000000000025 o 0.000152 o 4,709,000,000 o 0.000000783

7.10 Scientific Notation Write each number in decimal form. o 2.5 x 10 -13 o 6.47 x 10 9 o 7.83 x 10 -7 o 4.95 x 10 8 o 7.63 x 10 -5 o 5.812 x 10 5

7.10 Scientific Notation Write each number in Scientific Notation. o 0.4 x 10 6 o 25 x 10 -5 o 53.4% o 8.6 million Homework: – Pg. 338 Oral Exercises #1 – 6, 13 – 18 – Pg. 339 Written Exercises #15 – 22 (a only) Challenge Problems – Pg. 339 Written Exercises #23 - 26
