Fully-grouted repair, ready for Diamond Grinding

Partial Depth Repair Patch Area Primed for TechCrete

Crafco Product TechCrete Repair area after removal and sandblasting

Partial-Depth Synthetic Resin Patch

Finished Partial-Depth Repair (before diamond grinding)

Conventional Diamond Grinding   Cuts a 10’ – 14’ Flat Surface   From wheels behind the grinding head   To the front wheels

Diamond Grinding Machine

Diamond Grinding Some asphalt was left in localized low areas

Typical Final Surface (no asphalt remaining)

Ride Quality Data   2007 IRI (microsurfacing) = 160.94 in/mi   IRI (after asphalt milling) = 222.80 in/mi   IRI final (after CPR and diamond grinding) = 112.00 inches/mile

Project Costs  Polyurethane Slab Stabilization:  $4.32 /pound for 150,000 pounds ($648,000)  Pre-Cast Panels:  $472.89/s.y. for 4,900 s.y. ($2,317,161)  Synthetic resin Partial-Depth Repairs:  $1,113.95/s.y. for 490 s.y. ($545,835.50)  Diamond Grinding:  $7.63 s.y. for 266,750 s.y. ($1,963,280)

Project Schedule  8 –to-10-hour nightly work windows  Project began in March 2008  4 nights/week until September 2008;  Then 6 nights/week  Project completed December 23, 2008.

Another Example of “Buried Treasure”: Washington SR 522   2002 WashDOT rehab project   Old overlays and asphalt patches removed   Full-depth PCC repairs of damaged concrete   Replaced widened asphalt lanes with full-depth concrete lanes   Diamond ground entire surface   Provided final surface texture   Pavement still performing well today

Summary   Innovative, cost-effective pavement maintenance and repair solutions are needed in today’s financially challenging times.   Many concrete pavements “buried” under asphalt can be restored cost- effectively.   The RAP removed from overlaid PCCP has value and can help reduce project costs.
