The CTB Climate Science Team and the Transition Project Teams (S. Schubert and H.-L. Pan)

Current CST Membership and Proposed Rotation Lisa Goddard Oct 2008 Marty Hoerling Oct 2007 Ben Kirtman Oct 2009 (new co-chair beginning in Oct 2007) John Roads Oct 2008 Siegfried Schubert Oct 2009 (current cochair, term ends Sep 2007) Marina Timofeyeva Oct 2007 (Ex Officio) Jiayu Zhou Oct 2007 (Ex Officio) Externally-funded PIs –Tim Delsole –Michael Fox-Rabinovitz –Holly Hartmann –Michael McPhadden EMC and CPC members –Hua-Lu Pan (current cochair) –Arun Kumar –Kingtse Mo –Jae Schemm –Shrinivas Moorthi –Ken Mitchell –Suranjana Saha

Evolution of the CST Transition to become fully PI-based How to manage many new external PIs? –Important role of internal co-PI: manage resources –Need to be very careful about choosing good projects How to manage/rotate internal membership? –Limited number of people available from CPC and EMC –What about role of TPT chairs on CST? –Should internal PIs be on CST?

CST Terms of Reference Current: Guide CTB activities at the working level; Work with the TPTs to rank, monitor and track CTB experiments aligned with CTB objectives and resources; Provide advice on CTB contributions to the development path for NOAAs operational climate forecast systems and products; Monitor and evaluate results of CTB activities; Make recommendations to the CTB Director on computing resource usage priorities, and computing access policies Future needs: Review of new proposal computing requests after they pass science merit review (need review panel - not a CST function) Maintain strong connection between internal/TPT activities and external PIs Manage transition projects as the funded research becomes mature Continue to coordinate and manage computer resource for new and existing funded projects

CST proposal Modify the CST term of reference to reflect the transition of the CTB –Membership consists of internal and external PIs and TPT leads –Emphasize role of internal PI in maintaining connection between external PIs and TPT developments –Task of all members is to aid in the transition of mature CTB projects –CST members will be responsible for managing computing resources

The Current TPTs I. Climate Modeling Team - Jae Schemm and Shrinivas Moorthi –Climate Model Development Group – Shrinivas Moorthi –Climate Model Assessment Group - Jae Schemm –Ocean Data Assimilation Group - Dave Behringer –Land Data Assimilation Group - Ken Mitchell II. The Multi Model Ensemble (MME) Team - Suru Saha –MME Group - Suru Saha –Consolidation Group - Huug van den Dool –Verification of CFS Products Group - Arun Kumar III. The Climate Forecast Products Team - Ed Olenic –Drought Group –Climate Forecast products Group

Future of TPTs Issues –TPTs need to be the functional core of the CTB How will they interact with external projects? –How will they evolve? Need for a CFSRR team in FY08 Proposal –Internal PIs and TPT leads will be members of the CST –As CTB projects mature, the TPT should become the transition agent working with the PIs to complete the transition
