2 Government Systems Unitary System- gives all key powers to the national government National government can create provincial or local gov. Federal System- divides the powers of government between the national and provincial (state) governments a federal system of government Confederacy- loose union of independent states

3 Constitutions and Government Constitution – written or unwritten plan that provides the rules for government Purposes of a Const. Sets ideals people share Establishes basic structure of gov. and defines powers Provides the supreme law of the land Constitutional Government- is a government in which the constitution places limits on those in charge The U.S. is a const. gov. because the president can not do anything he wants China is not because there is very little the gov cannot do

4 Preamble- states the goals and purposes of a constitution Constitutional law- involves the interpretation and application of the const. Defines the extent and limits of the government and the rights of citizens

5 Politics and Government Politics – is any effort to control or influence the conduct and policies of government The Federalist : a series of papers written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay that sought to persuade people to ratify the newly written constitution(1787-1788)

6 Governing in a complex world Industrialized nation- nations with large industry and advanced technology ( first world nation) Developing Nations- nation that are just beginning to industrialize(third world nation) Between these two are many nations who are newly industrialized such as Mexico, Kenya, Algeria

7 Growing interdependence Due to rapid advancement of technology and transportation the actions of one nation effect many others For example fighting in a middle eastern country might make oil transport harder and the price of gas in the U.S. will rise

8 Nonstate International Groups Many groups that are not associated with any one country have an impact on many countries These groups include large companies, terrorist groups or national liberation organizations
