2 6 Roles and Responsibilities of the Ringette Coach (70 MIN) Rationale: There are many tasks that must be done for a community sport team. Coaching staffs must be organized and prepared to do the tasks effectively. (Mini Lecture) Objective: To determine the roles of the coaching staff and to specify how to share these responsibilities before, during, and after a competition, as well as at practices.

3 6 Roles and Responsibilities of the Ringette Coach 6.1.1 You, the coaches, are arranged in 4 groups and each group is assigned to fill out one column of the table on flipchart paper then post its responses. Each group rotates to the next piece of flipchart paper and adds any tasks it feels is missing. Highlight any key points or add ideas that may be missing. You, the coaches, then enter the key points in 6.1.1 in your Coach Workbook. Groups read Team and Equipment Management and Planning in the Toolkit and revise your answers to 6,1.1 as needed

4 6 Roles and Responsibilities of the Ringette Coach 6.2.1 Stay in your 4 groups and you will be assigned 1 of the following. –Before the game –During the game –After the game –At a tournament You have five minutes to brainstorm all of the tasks and responsibilities for the situation you are assigned. (6.2.1) Your group shares your responses with the whole group in order.

One favourite is “I love watching you play!” Questions that focus on the experience work too: ” Did you have fun? What did you learn today? –6.4.1 Coaches do on your own. 11 6 Roles and Responsibilities of the Ringette Coach Debrief: Let’s put Competition in Perspective You may feel pressure during competitions to “play to win.” It is during these moments that it is absolutely critical to reflect on the proven reasons most children participate in sport. –After a competition, children will soon forget who won and who lost, but what will stay with them is the feedback you gave and whether they felt a part of the team. It is important to focus on factors that are within the participants’ control, such as their effort, their behaviour, and working on skills that were introduced in practice, rather than factors outside their control, such as the outcome of the competition and officials’ calls.

14 BC Ringette CSI Atom B ….too long ago We believe that hockey is the best medium for teaching kids the skills of communication, teamwork, support, and respect. We believe that the coaches’ primary goal is in the development of the complete hockey player. The complete hockey player is an individual who is skilled as a player and as a person. The development of a slap shot should never supersede the development of teamwork, caring and support.

22 BC Ringette CSI Dr. Smoll, a sport psychologist in Washington State suggested coaches need to learn a feedback sandwich. A positive statement, a constructive statement, and a positive statement. For example “Johnny, Great effort! Remember you need to follow through a bit more with the stick. Now keep that same great effort.” Dr. Smoll did a famous study where he taught half of the coaches in the baseball league how to use his feedback sandwich while the other half were left on their own. He found that the players who participated with better communicating coaches were more likely to play past the age of 17. His results were staggering …

28 Wrap up and Evaluation Here are the steps in the evaluation process: When a workshop’s coaches are checked off and the workshop is marked as completed, an email is sent to each coach asking him or her to complete the workshop evaluation. A link to the evaluation is included in the email. The coach can then complete the evaluation and submit it. Coaches can edit an evaluation for 24 hours after submitting it. Coaches can also begin the evaluation of the workshop from the Status area on RC’s Coaching Website. Each workshop a coach has completed will have an 'evaluate clinic' link.
