NOAA/Roshydromet Data Exchange Workshop 30-November to 1-December 2011 1 Recap of Day 1 Actions NOAA/Roshydromet Data Exchange Workshop Presented by Howard Diamond, NOAA/National Climatic Data Center Director, World Data Center for Meteorology

NOAA/Roshydromet Data Exchange Workshop 30-November to 1-December 2011 2 Bilateral Areas of Cooperation Bilateral Agreement Area 5.1.1 - Management of climatological data exchange and empirical and statistical study of climate general matters (e.g., data rescue). Bilateral Agreement Area 5.1.2 - Management of upper-air data exchange and empirical and statistical analyses of current and historical change of atmospheric climate data. Bilateral Agreement Area 5.1.3 - Continued exchange of surface related data for climate research purposes, and related improvements to the archival data holdings at both World Data Centers.

NOAA/Roshydromet Data Exchange Workshop 30-November to 1-December 2011 35.1.1 NCAR provided terabyte drive with full ICOADS database NCAR offered Roshydromet the opportunity to have a visiting scientist or technical person work at NCAR for 2-3 months NCAR offered Roshydromet the opportunity to have a visiting scientist or technical person work at NCAR for 2-3 months NCDC (Nancy R.) to provide Archive process and CLASS documentation to Roshydromet NCDC (Nancy R.) to provide Archive process and CLASS documentation to Roshydromet Look into the exchange of data rescue plans and techniques Look into the exchange of data rescue plans and techniques CDIAC offered some possible Value-Added graphics product support along the lines of what they do for HCN-M for other areas (e.g., USCRN and USRCRN) CDIAC offered some possible Value-Added graphics product support along the lines of what they do for HCN-M for other areas (e.g., USCRN and USRCRN)

NOAA/Roshydromet Data Exchange Workshop 30-November to 1-December 2011 4 5.1.2 NCDC agreed to provide Severe Weather database (in Microsoft Access) to Roshydromet to help support economic analysis work (Stuart Hinson) Roshydromet brought the latest copy of upper air AEROSTAS dataset – through 2010 for NCDC (beginning in Feb 2011) – Ascii output Roshydromet brought the latest copy of upper air AEROSTAS dataset – through 2010 for NCDC (beginning in Feb 2011) – Ascii output Issue of new NOAA upper air system measurements (1-second high-res data) vice 6-second data from older MicroART system was discussed Issue of new NOAA upper air system measurements (1-second high-res data) vice 6-second data from older MicroART system was discussed NCDC (Howard Diamond) will provide Roshydromet with a copy of the data continuity planning for side-by-side upper air comparisons at 4 sites (Guam, Barrow, Caribou, and Sterling) NCDC (Howard Diamond) will provide Roshydromet with a copy of the data continuity planning for side-by-side upper air comparisons at 4 sites (Guam, Barrow, Caribou, and Sterling) NCDC (Russ Vose) will provide data continuity study data to Roshydromet as well as more effective access to IGRA data NCDC (Russ Vose) will provide data continuity study data to Roshydromet as well as more effective access to IGRA data

NOAA/Roshydromet Data Exchange Workshop 30-November to 1-December 2011 5 5.1.3 Jointly develop an inventory of data that has been agreed to be exchanged in the past, as well as plans for new data sets Roshydromet provide Snow and Ice Crust dataset to Pasha Groisman Roshydromet provide Snow and Ice Crust dataset to Pasha Groisman Roshydromet provide soil data at multiple levels from 431 stations to NSIDC Roshydromet provide soil data at multiple levels from 431 stations to NSIDC Roshydromet station histories work – project covers 16 stations (out of a set of 500 on the Roshydromet web site) back to 1835 – Estimated completion sometime in 2012 – great interest in the exchange of this data Roshydromet station histories work – project covers 16 stations (out of a set of 500 on the Roshydromet web site) back to 1835 – Estimated completion sometime in 2012 – great interest in the exchange of this data
