Why ask questions? Some reasons we had in mind:  Session concreteness.  information is vague.  Probes help meet the stage one goal of getting the person talking so you can begin to understand them. Example: "There is this woman who I have been getting to know and …I don't know …. I saw her the other day and things just weird.”

What we can learn from probes… Value Questions  Helps IG become conscious of their blind spots Forming value questions  Remember empathy statements?  What do you value about _____?  What does it mean for you to _____? Feelings Situation Meaning/Values

Directive vs. Nondirective Nondirective questions  Usually open ended  Non-judgemental  Allows IG to take control Directive questions  Usually close ended  Often judgmental  form of advice-giving Examples of directive questions:  Have you talked to your roommate about this? (advice)  Don’t you feel angry?

Tangent questions  Ex. Who is he? Do I know him?

Remember Empathy… =

Ask Risa Questions! Risa, 20, near end of second year at college: “I’ve been in college for almost two years now and nothing much has happened. The teachers here are only so-so. I thought they’d be a lot better. At least, that’s what I heard. I’m disappointed, I guess. And I can’t say much for the social life here, either. Things go the same from day to day, week to week.”
