Why or Why not? 2.What are three epic hero traits that you think are most applicable to Beowulf? 3.What purpose do you think that imagery plays in the Beowulf Epic? How does the method of delivery for the poem impact your answer?

3 LITERARY DEVICES TO LOOK/LISTEN FOR: Allusion: An allusion is an indirect reference to or mention of something. Alliteration: Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound in the beginning of the words or in the stressed syllables of words. Symbol: A symbol represents or indicates something else. Personification: Personification is giving human form or characteristics to things that are abstract. Kenning: A kenning is a descriptive compound expression that is used in place of what it’s describing. Ex. Battle-Sweat = Blood

4 TRAITS OF EPIC *Tells the story of a great hero and reflects the values of the culture from which it comes. 1. Qualities – spoke of heroes and heroic deeds 2. Mead halls and Scops – cultural center and the professional story tellers 3. Value – spread stories – provide instructions and morality lessons

5 TRAITS OF EPIC HERO Superior in degree to other men and to his environment Virtuous HUMAN – capable of error, vulnerable, and not immune to death Strives for Honor and Fame Possesses Christian characteristics of kindness, valor, loyalty, and gentleness

6 CULTURAL VALUES OF ANGLO-SAXONS 1.Be strong in battle. 2.Help those who need it. 3.Keep your word. 4.Honor your lord.

7 WHO/WHAT IS WYRD???? Wyrd is the Pagan god who controls fate! What do you remember about pagans and fate?

8 WHAT IS COMITATUS AGAIN? An agreement between the lord and his men How do we see this in Beowulf? Hrothgar is generous with his men and provides them a vibrant mead hall Hrothgar’s men continue to follow him because of the understood agreement of comitatus Beowulf’s men join him in battle because of comitatus – they share in his glory but must also support him in return When is comitatus broken in Beowulf? When Beowulf’s men leave him to fight the dragon alone Only Wiglaf honors the comitatus
