Solving Two-Step Equations Rice/Bise

What is a Two-Step Equation? An equation written in the form Ax + B = C

Examples of Two-Step Equations a)3x – 5 = 16 b)y/4 + 3 = 12 c)5n + 4 = 6 d)n/2 – 6 = 4

Steps for Solving Two-Step Equations 1.Add or Subtract 2. Multiply or Divide

Inverse/Opposite Operations Addition  Subtraction Multiplication  Division (Multiply by the reciprocal if it is a fraction)

Helpful Hints? Identify what operations are in the room with the variable. (Add, Sub, Mult, Div) “Undo” the operation by using inverse operations. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other side to keep equation balanced.

Ex. 1: Solve 4x – 5 = 15 4x – 5 = 15 +5 +5(Add 5 to both sides) 4x = 20(Simplify) 4 4(Divide both sides by 4) x = 5(Simplify)

Try This Example 1.2x – 5 = 17

Ex. 2: Solve x/3 + 4 = 9 x/3 + 4 = 9 - 4 - 4 (Subt. 4 from both sides) x/3 = 5 (Simplify) (x/3)  3 = 5  3 (Mult. by 3 on both sides) x = 15 (Simplify)

Try this example! 2. c/7 + 4 = 9

Sage and Scribe Procedures Partner A starts with problem one. They are the hand. They write only what they are told to write. Partner B starts by being the voice. They need to explain the problem to A as A writes it down. When the problem is complete give positive reinforcement and switch jobs! This may get frustrating but try to stick to the rules.
