3 Álvaro Castro

4 “Álvaro Castro is widely acknowledged to be the leading producer in Portugal’s Dão region; in my book he's one of the top winegrowers in all of Portugal.” -Jaime Goode “Alvaro Castro may be the most talented wine grower you’ve never heard of, at least when it comes to Portuguese wine…he took a Mad Max approach to winemaking, jury-rigging the most basic technologies in his cellar to create experimental wines as well as fiercely traditional, site expressive white and red Dãos.” - Joshua Greene, Editor Wine & Spirits Magazine On most short lists to be nominated as the finest producer in his region, Castro makes a wide variety of wines that have two things in common—they have character and they tend to age well. In the USA, hardly anyone knows who he is—or even what Dao is. In Portugal, he is a cult-ish winemaker and people recognize the enormous potential in this old region..” - Mark Squires, the Wine Advocate OVERVIEW Year Founded: 1989 Proprietor: Alvaro Castro Winemaker: Alvaro Castro Annual production: 250,000 bottles Vineyard Area: 62 hectares Varieties Cultivated: Alfrocheiro, Bical, Cercial, Encruzado, Jaen, Malvasia, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga-Nacional Alvaro Castro- Quinta da Pellada

6 “The wine world would be a very different place without Álvaro de Castro. Portuguese wines would be much more predictable and the Dão region would be missing a leading personality. Irrespective of the fact that de Castro’s family has owned its property there since the 16 th century, there is no trace of arrogance in de Castro’s attitude. On the contrary, his sincerity is astounding and his simplicity a trace of his distinctive character, which has turned legendary because of his wines and his amazing life stories. Far from following trends or others,Álvaro de Castro makes wines in his own, sometimes unconventional, way – following his instinct and individual understanding of the world. Wines made from local grapes - worked in the cellar in an almost chaotic way - turn out to be some of the greatest wines produced from the Dão. Using fermentation processes not always easy to understand, and beneath a cover of alleged disorganization, lies a determined and coherent man - a great ambassador of the Dão region and one of the most prominent personalities of the Portuguese wine world.” -Rui Falcão (renowned Portuguese wine journalist, author and wine educator)
