1 Abigail K. Greene Period A
Radium Hello, my name is Abigail, and today I will be talking to you about the Element called Radium. You might be confused as to why I have a picture of a clock the reason why is that to make the numbers and the arms glow you must use a Radium based paint. The Ra stands for Radium and 88 is its number and protons. Its atomic mass is 226. witch is measured in anu Abigail K. Greene Period A

2 Properties of Element Group; 2,Alkaline Earth Metal
Reacts with; oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, nitrogen Density; 5 grams per cubic centimeter Radium belongs to group two with is called the Alkaline Earth Metals. These Elements have two electrons in there covering. Group two gets the name Alkaline from there oxides that project alkaline solutions. The word Earth comes from when these elements oxides cause them only to burn at extremely high temperatures so in a normal fire they stay in there true Earth form, and do not mutate to a new form. There is nothing special to explain about the metal part because they are metals to say the least. Radium is extremely reactive with Chloride, or Radium with Bromine, and usually never used as a pure Metal. You may or may not know the reason why Radium is almost never used as a pure substance. The reason is because Radium is a Hazard because it is extremely radioactive. The density of Radium is 5 grams per cubic centimeter. Protons 88 Netrons 138.

3 Properties of Element Melting Point; 1292 degrees F
Boiling point; 2084 degrees F State of Matter; Solid The melting point of Radium is 1,262 degrees F. The boiling point is 2,084 degrees F. You may be wondering why its melting point and boiling point are at such high temperatures this is because its oxides cause it to withstand sir ten temperatures. Radium’s state of mater is a solid.

4 History Discovered by; Marie Sklodowska Curie, Pierre Currie
When Discovered; 1898 Lead to Discovery; Noticing unrefined pitchblende Marie Curie died discovering Radium Radium was discovered by Marie Sklodowska Curie and Pierre Curie. As you may guess by looking at there last name’s, they were a married couple with a shared love of science. They discovered Radium in 1898 when they were researching the radiation in pitchblende. They became curious as to why the Radioactive leaves were so high and stated to do experiments to see if there was another element making it stronger in doing this they discovered a new element with startlingly high levels of Radiation which sadly proved to be extremely deadly. They named this newly discovered element Radium because of its strong radiation levels. The two continued to make crucial discoveries in science until the day came that when Marie’s strong love for science took her life. She died because of her love of science introduced her to strongly high levels of Radiation levels that sucked the life out of her. One of the main causes of her Radiation poisoning was in experimenting and discovering Radium. As they say curiosity killed the cat.

5 How Radium is Used Radioactive Small Refrigerator Clock Hands
Radium Paint Treating Cancer Back in the days Radium was used in small Refrigerators as they were coated in uranium ore witch hold Radium in it. As well as it was used in clock hands. Another way Radium is used is in paint. This is what lead to the discovery that Radium is deadly. As you saw on the first slide there was a picture of a clock with glowing hands. To make the hands of the clock glow it was painted with a layers of luminous Radium paint(this was a high fashion statement back in the day for watches as it glowed and is now a radioactive antique, but sadly they do not glow anymore.) As I was saying they discovered that Radium was deadly after many women died of the same cause at an early age. All of the women had hand painted the famous wrist watches. While hand painting them they would put the brush in there mouths to wet it causing direct contact with the elements Radiation to there bodies there for making them sick to the extent of death. It is used to treat cancer as the Radium is used to get other radioactive substances then directed at the cancer.
