6 Chapter 16: The Judiciary The US has a dual system of courts, a federal court system and the court systems of each of the 50 states. Under the Articles, there was no court system. This weakness led to Article III of the Constitution, which states there will be one Supreme Court and that Congress may establish a system of inferior courts.
