PROJECT WEEK 2014 « INVENTIONS » PowerPoint by Lisa Demangeat

2 WHAT IS AN INVENTION? Why were these things invented?
Everything in the world (made by people) to make our lives: easier, safer, and fun! Why were these things invented? How do they help your life?

3 Take a walk around your house. How many inventions can you count?
OBSERVE AND DISCUSS Take a walk around your house. How many inventions can you count? Try to imagine what life was like before them.

4 People who create inventions are called inventors.
Inventors need to plan, do, and review a lot before their inventions work. PLAN DO REVIEW What do you think this inventor (Clement Ader) was trying to invent?

5 The first airplane that flew was invented by the Wright Brothers.
Did you guess an airplane? The first airplane that flew was invented by the Wright Brothers. But, they learned a lot from the inventors who had tried before them! Yahoooo!

6 People are always finding ways
to improve inventions that already exist. 1834 1927 2014 1893 1927 2014 1893 1970 2000

7 Many inventions were created to help us save time.

8 Do you know what these inventions
Speaking of time…. Do you know what these inventions were used for? Try to guess…

9 These are just some of them.
Did you guess for telling time? A long time ago, when clocks and watches didn’t exist, people invented ways to keep track of time. Hourglass Sundial Time candles These are just some of them.

10 Thousands of years ago, people figured out the time of day
by looking at the sun as it crossed the sky. Good night Good morning

11 When the sun seemed directly over their heads,
they would know it was half way between day and night. Do you know what time that is? YES! Midday (12:00), lunch time! Good night Good morning

12 But there was a big problem with only using the sun as a clock…
Can you guess what the problem was? Yes! They couldn’t tell the time during the night!

13 So inventors kept planning, doing, and reviewing… Until…

14 DRUM ROLL…

15 You had to wind it up! The first mechanical clock was invented,
600 hundred years ago, before electricity! You had to wind it up!

16 Different types of wind up clocks were used
until electricity was invented. If you forgot to wind them up, they would stop working! Oh no! When do I go to school?

17 Finally, electric clocks were invented
150 years ago. Electricity made the clocks wind up all by themselves.

18 What kinds of electric clocks do you have at home?
Some need batteries and some plug in. Digital clocks just have numbers. Analog clocks have hands. Hour Minutes Small hand (Hour) Big hand (Minutes)

19 Living with electric clocks and watches made life easier to organize.
It’s 7:00 (7 o’clock). Time to get up! It’s 12:00 (12 o’clock). Time for lunch! It’s 8:10 (10 minutes after 8). Time to go to school!

20 Wow! Clocks sure have changed over « time »!
Sundial Hour glass Water clock Time candle Maybe I can even design a clock! Wind-up Clocks Electric clocks

21 Next week, during Project Week, you are going to
have the time of your life! The project you will be making is a surprise, but here’s a little clue… Takes some time, To tell the time, We have no time to lose! Check some of the links below to help you learn to tell the time. The links will only work in « slideshow » format Songs Explaining how we measure time BrainPOP login: americansection password: student Part s of a clock. Telling time by the minutes (by 5’s). Warning: Gets too complicated after 2:44 Game: Should watch links above, before playing.
