A long time ago, when clocks and watches didn’t
exist, people invented ways to keep track of time.

10. Thousands of years ago, people figured out the time of day
by looking at the sun as it crossed the sky.

11. When the sun seemed directly over their heads,
they would know it was half way between day and night.
Do you know what time that is?
YES! Midday (12:00), lunch time!

12. But there was a big problem with only using the sun as a clock…
Can you guess what the problem was?
Yes! They couldn’t tell the time during the night!

13. So inventors kept
planning,
doing,
and reviewing…
Until…

14. DRUM ROLL…

15. You had to wind it up! The first mechanical clock was invented,
600 hundred years ago, before electricity!

16. Different types of wind up clocks were used
until electricity was invented.
If you forgot
to wind them up,
they would stop
working!
Oh no! When do I go to school?

17. Finally, electric clocks were invented
150 years ago.
Electricity

all by themselves.

Some need batteries and some plug in.

just have numbers.
