6 Climate The long-term (usually at least 30 years) weather average for a particular area. There are several systems for classifying climates. Koppen system, named after its original creator, Wladimir Koppen (1846 – 1940) now includes six major climate categories based on average annual and monthly temperatures and precipitation. Tropical, dry, mild, severe, polar and highland, is identified by a letter from A to E and H. These categories are further subdivided and may be identified by variations in precipitation ( 4 lowercase letters) and temperature (additional 6 lowercase letters)
