1 Activator: What’s the Question? ANSWER: A story that explains how things came to be. What’s the QUESTION?:

2 “How the World Was Made” Pages 11-15 This myth is from the Cheyenne tribe, which inhabited North America in the Minnesota and Dakotas area. The Cheyenne culture was closely linked with nature and highly dependent on the buffalo for numerous things. As we read, take note of how the myth reflects their attitude toward nature.

3 “The Wooden People” Pages 18-20 This myth is from the Quiche Mayan culture, which inhabited Central America in the Guatemala area. This story is the third part of a four part creation story. In parts one and two, the gods attempt and fail to create sustainable human beings. As we read, take note of how the gods’ actions reveal characteristics of the Quiche Mayan culture and beliefs.

How humans came to be INSTRUCTIONS: Working with a partner, you will select either the Little Coot or Grandmother Turtle from “How the World Was Made” and one of the personified household items from “The Wooden People.” Next, you will create a comic strip depicting a conversation between your two characters. Through their dialogue, each character should explain each of the following to the other: 2. His or her own role in creation 4. How the myth reflects the culture Their conversation can be in the form of an argument, a friendly discussion, a contest, etc. Your comic strip should be neat and colorful.

5 Summarizer: “Luck” of the Draw INSTRUCTIONS: I will draw numbers at random. If I draw the number desk at which you sit, I will call on you to answer one of the following questions: 1. What is an origin myth? 2. How is “How the World Was Made” an origin myth? 3. How is “The Wooden People” an origin myth?
