3 Google Exec Breaks Felix Baumgartner's Space Jump World Record Google senior vice president Alan Eustace broke the world record for highest- altitude jump, which has stood since October 2012 when Felix Baumgartner set it with his Red Bull Stratos jump. Eustace climbed for over two hours to a maximum altitude of 135,890 feet (or nearly 26 miles), topping Baumgartner’s previous mark of 127,851 feet. The jump, which was kept secret, was first reported by the New York Times‘ John Markoff. Reaching a maximum speed of 822 miles per hour, Eustace broke the speed of sound during his descent; observers below reportedly heard the sonic boom. That still does not match Baumgartner’s world record speed of 844 miles per hour. The Times story does not explain why Eustace was unable to reach the same speed, though a guess would be that his suit was less aerodynamic.844 miles per hour That would make sense, considering that Eustace’s suit doubled as his life- support system during the ascent. Unlike the Red Bull Stratos jump, during which Baumgartner rode up in a pressurized capsule, Eustace simply dangled below his helium balloon. The entire project took nearly three years to develop, and included modifications for temperature control intended to prevent visor fogging, an issue that Baumgartner dealt with during his jump. http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissmith/2014/10/24/google-exec-breaks-felix-baumgartners-space-jump-world-record/
