Risking Rejection in The story of the Good Samaritan

Luke 10:25-37 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?“ "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?“ He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'“ "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live.“ But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:25-37 (continued) But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.‘ "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?“ The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

What happens in Luke 10  Guy asks Jesus a couple of questions  Jesus tells a story –Man is traveling and gets robbed and left for dead –Priest crosses the road to avoid him –Levite crosses the road to avoid him –Samaritan picks him up, cleans him up, takes him to safety, pays to have him looked after, and goes back later to check he is okay.

Who were the Samaritans?  Worshipped the God of Israel  Offered to help rebuild the Temple  Based beliefs and practices on the first five books of Jewish Scripture  Believed in God as the unique Creator and Sustainer of all things.  Worshiped Him in the three feasts prescribed in the books of the Law-- Passover, Pentecost, and Booths (or Tabernacles)-- and the solemn Day of Atonement.  Were hated by the Jews, and considered impure, opportunistic heathens who didn’t do things the right way

So where is this rejection?  Man is rejected by priest  Man is rejected by Levite  Samaritan risks rejection in helping an Israelite. –By the Israelite –By his own people

David the reject  No-one thought he was worth considering as a candidate for kingship (1 Sam 16)  He tried to make King Saul feel better, and Saul just threw spears at him (1 Sam 19)  He served Saul faithfully, and Saul just tried harder to kill him.

I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you. All who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honour him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel (Psalm 22:22-23)

Coping with rejection  Acknowledge it.  Acknowledge God

So what is it all about?

 It is not about: –Being the right person –Having the right job –Following the rules of religion –Doing church the same way you’ve always done it. –Looking like it’s all under control

So what is it all about?  It is about: –Doing the right thing –Valuing people ahead of process –Being less worried about what other people might think.
