2 Today’s Agenda – 1/21/11 Opener: What is the difference between an endothermic and exothermic reaction? Review of Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions (graphs, activation energy, catalysts, energy written in chemical equations) Work on Final Project Closure: Draw a graph of an Exothermic Reaction. Label the axis and the activation energy. Draw a second graph for the reaction in the presence of a catalayst. Assignment: Complete the Final Exam Review Packet.

Concept: Apply the mole concept, or Avogadro’s number, in stoichiometric calculations, including those involving limiting reactants and percent yield. PA Standards: 1. 3.2.10.A5: Apply the mole concept to determine number of particles and molar mass for elements and compounds. 2. 3.2.10.A4: Standard - 3.2.10.A4: Predict the amounts of products and reactants in a chemical reaction using mole relationships. Explain the difference between endothermic and exothermic reactions.

4 Curriculum Big Idea: Chemical bonding occurs as a result of attractive forces between particles. Concept: Chemical bonding can be covalent, polar covalent, or ionic. PA Standard: 3.2.C.A2 “Explain how atoms combine to form compounds through both ionic and covalent bonding.”

5 Curriculum Big Idea: Changes in matter are accompanied by changes in energy. Competency: Demonstrate how changes in matter are accompanied by changes in energy. PA Standard 3.2.10.A4: Explain the difference between endothermic and exothermic reactions.

6 Curriculum Big Idea: Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Concept: Mixtures can be separated by physical means because the different components have different properties. PA Standard 3.2.C.A4: Predict how combinations of substances can result in physical and/or chemical changes.

7 Curriculum Big Idea: Chemical reactions are predictable Concept: Common chemical reactions can be categorized as synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, or combustion. PA Standard: 3.2.C.A2 Predict the chemical formulas for simple ionic and molecular compounds.
