2 SUMMARY CONVICTION OFFENCES Minor criminal offences People accused of these can be summoned to court without delay Max penalty under CC is $2000 and/or 6 months in jail

3 INDICTABLE OFFENCES Serious crimes that carry more severe penalties Criminal code sets maximum penalty for each offence (e.g. 25 yrs for some offences) Some offences have minimum penalty (e.g. $600 to 5 years for impaired driving) (e.g. 2 yrs for gun related offences) Trial judge decides the penalty

4 HYBRID OFFENCES Offences for which the Crown attourney has the right to proceed summarily and impose a less severe punishment, or proceed by indictment. E.g. theft, assault, indecent act, extortion, etc...
