Department of Bioengineering Bone Repair Techniques: Fracture Testing of Chicken Bones 102-1B Ted Lee – Background & Hypothesis Nikhil Deshmukh – Methods & Protocol Mustafa Al-Ammar – Deliverables & Pitfalls Manuel Sanchez – Equipment & Budget

Department of Bioengineering Background: We are interested in how the mechanical properties of bones are modified after bone repair techniques are performed on fractured bone. Hypothesis(es) & Aim(s) or Objective(s): Aim: To evaluate the mechanical properties of bones fractured in different locations which have been repaired with plaster wraps Hypotheses: 1) Bones will not fracture at repaired wrap 2) The closer the repaired region to the center of the bone: a) the higher the overall stiffness, b) the lower fracture energy, and c) the lower yield strength. Ted Lee

Department of Bioengineering Methods & Protocol: Setup the instron Cut surrogate wooden sticks to sample size and practice acquiring data, setting up overall testing variables on the instron machine Use wooden sticks to create pilot tests to select a bending jig to use for the experiment, and record the fracture pattern for each run Fracture different wooden sticks at 1 cm intervals from the center and repair with plaster Remove meat and skin from chicken bones in manner outlined in lab manual Measure appropriate dimensions of the bone Fracture different chicken bones at 1 cm intervals from the center (5 bones per location/ sample group) and repair with plaster Repeat the bending testing for 5 bones and record data in a separate file name for each specimen T-test of: of all different sample groups versus each other and original data from experiment 4 Nikhil Deshmukh

Department of Bioengineering Proposed Deliverables/Findings: Potential Pitfalls: Non-uniform samples may produce inconsistent results The cast may break in an irregular pattern (diagonally) Inconsistent casting (for the bones) may vary results There is no specific trend in the bone breaking point The results of this experiment include: 1.Fracture energy of the chicken bone with and without cast 2.The Strain the chicken bone undergoes with and without cast 3.Whether the bone break in the same place when placed in a cast 4.Other material properties of the chicken bone with and without cast including: Yield Strength Stiffness (Elastic Modulus) Mustafa Al-ammar

Department of Bioengineering Equipment/Materials and Budget & Justification: Halal Chicken Drumsticks – $1.39/lb – need 5 lbs = $6.95 Justification: our sample, Mustafa cannot touch non-halal meat IM-Pact Elastic Plaster Material – $91.00 for 72, 2 inch bandages Instron Machine – Provided By Lab Knives – Provided By Lab Manuel Sanchez
