Excellence Exemplar 0 (Low Angle) Morpheus is often shot from a low angle in this scene. For example, when Neo sits and Morpheus moves to his chair, the extreme low angle mid shot exaggerates his physical size. [E + D] This makes Morpheus seem imposing or powerful by making the audience look up to him. He seems a larger-than-life figure in comparison to Neo. [X] The use of a low camera angle also reinforces his difference from Neo. The low angle shots are frequently established from behind the chairs as if we, the viewers, are crouching. [D + X] By implying that the audience needs to stay hidden and observe in secret, the director suggests that Morpheus is not just powerful but potentially or possibly threatening. [RE] Sometimes these shots are used as if they are a POV shot from the perspective of the person not in shot. [CO] This helps involve the audience in the scene by making us feel for a moment as if we are the other person in the scene. Together with the ominous music, dim lighting, grungy set, thunder sound effects and cryptic, almost whispered dialogue the director has used this to increase the intensity of the scene for the audience.
