3. Booking Up the Summer with Reading: Grant The Reading Recovery department submitted & received a grant to NEF. As a result, all students completing Reading Recovery will receive a set of books to read over the summer. In addition parents will be offered a training opportunity to help support their child’s reading.

7. Now you try it with your child… Briefly talk about the book. Step 1 Introduce the book Ask your child to look through the pictures & discuss what they think the story might be about. Step 2 Picture Walk Use the bookmark prompts to help your child as necessary. Remembe r do not rush to their rescue Step 3 Listen to your child read Using one of the graphic organizers ask your child to write about the story. (complete at least once a week) Step 5 Writing Discuss a tricky word that your child figured out and praise them. Then find a word they were unable to read and discuss a strategy they could have used. Step 4 After the reading

RECORDING YOUR CHILD’S READING A recording of your child’s reading will be emailed to you prior to the end of the school year. This will give you an idea of how your child’s reading sounds. At the beginning of the 2015 school year your child will read the same text and that recording will be sent to you by email. You can use these two recordings to compare how their fluency has changed over the summer.
