US relations w/ Cuba deteriorated b/c of Castro’s economic policies (nationalizing foreign owned industries) 3.How was the Cuban missile crisis resolved? US blockade of Cuba & troops on alert in Florida led Khrushchev to remove missiles in return for US promise not to invade Cuba 4.What were the consequences of civil war for Nicaragua? Weakened economy & political unrest 5.Why did the Ayatollah Khomeini hate the US? US had supported the shah; westernization of Iran 6.What part did the US play in the Iran Iraq war? Secretly sold arms to Iran 7.How was the SU involvement in Afghanistan similar to the US involvement in Vietnam? Both were costly wars that lasted longer than expected; both resulted in superpowers being overthrown by rebel forces
