3 PPPs for economic development Development of the University of York and the growth of the knowledge economy around it through three related Public Private Partnerships Science City York York Science Park Expansion of the University campus with integrated accommodation for businesses

4 Science City York Strategic partnership between University of York; City of York; Yorkshire Forward (Regional Development Agency); business Endorsed by UK Government – five further Science Cities named to develop and exploit the model elsewhere Aims to maximise economic impact of University through aligning University, government and business activities to support the development of the knowledge economy around the University – the “Triple Helix” model Created 100 new companies and 3,000 new jobs in initial phase Current activities include: Cluster development (Bioscience; IT & digital; Creative; Business Services; Environmental) Draw-down of regional, national and EU funds for development of innovation infrastructure (eg £25+m of ERDF funding) Re-development of mining site with UK Coal for biorenewables

5 York Science Park Partnership between University of York; P&O Holdings; private investors; local, regional and national government 8.4 hectare site adjacent to University Anchor tenant: Smith & Nephew Global R&D HQ 3 incubator buildings: Innovation Centre; Biocentre; IT Centre – total 10,000 sq metres Now built-out Total of 27,000 sq metres of office and lab space 96 companies and 1,490 employees

7 University Campus Extension: 1 Partnership between University of York; financial institutions; regional and national government; property developers £500m development over next 10 to 15 years Doubles size of University campus 180 hectares including buffering and landscaping 65 hectares to be developed at 23% footprint Up to 25 of the 65 hectares for university-related business use (three times current science park) Exciting opportunity to build an open innovation environment for business and academia

8 University campus extension: 2 Initial complex of buildings £180m development, opening 2009-2010 £65m from University; £35m from regional and central government; £80m from financial institutions New buildings for Computer Science; Theatre Film and Television; Management; Law Ron Cooke Hub to promote knowledge exchange between faculty, business and students Business accommodation in department buildings, Hub and Catalyst building (creative and digital incubator) Promoting further economic growth
