P UBLIC H EALTH Healthcare that deals with the health status and outcome of entire communities or populations. The practice of applying scientific knowledge to health promotion and disease prevention at the population level. “What we, as a society, do collectively to assure the conditions in which all people can be healthy.” (IOM, 1988).

M ODEL S TANDARD 6.1 Review and Evaluate Laws, Regulations, and Ordinances Identify public health issues that can only be addressed through laws, regulations, or ordinances. Have access to current federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances that protect the public’s health. Review public health laws, regulations, and ordinances at least once every 5 years. Have access to legal counsel for assistance in the review of laws, regulations, and ordinances.

M ODEL S TANDARD 6.2 Participate actively in the Improvement of Laws, Regulations, and Ordinances Identify local public health issues that are not adequately addressed through existing laws, regulations, and ordinances. Participate in the modification of existing laws, regulations, and/or the formulation of new laws, regulations, and ordinances designed to assure and improve the public’s health Provide technical assistance and public health expertise for drafting proposed legislation, regulations, and ordinances.

Enforce Laws, Regulations, and Ordinances Identify organizations in our LPHS with authority to enforce public health laws, regulations, and ordinances. Assure that all enforcement activities are conducted in a timely manner in accordance with laws, regulations, and ordinances. Inform and educate individuals/organizations of the meaning and purpose of public health laws, regulations, and ordinances with which they are required to comply. Evaluate compliance of regulated organizations and entities. M ODEL S TANDARD 6.3
