NSTX Upgrade Project – Final Design Review June 22 - 24, 2011 Outline – questions to be addressed 2 Does the final design meet the requirements for the NSTX Upgrade Project as delineated in the General Requirements Documents? What is the basis for verifying the final design? Have previous recommendations from previous reviews been adequately addressed? Have risks been identified and addressed? Do cost and schedule estimates need to be changed to reflect effort to complete the project?

NSTX Upgrade Project – Final Design Review June 22 - 24, 2011 Thermocouples, Mirnov coils, Rogowski coils, and Langmuir probes closely match locations of present NSTX CS sensors 3 COOLING INLET/OUTLET TC LP 2D MIRNOV 1D MIRNOV ROGOWSKI GAS INJ. PORT

NSTX Upgrade Project – Final Design Review June 22 - 24, 2011 Center stack diagnostics design meets requirements of General Requirements Document 4 Plasma Control and Equilibrium – Section 1.1 of NSTX Diagnostics System Requirements Document –Inside plasma-facing components Mirnov/Pickup Coils Tile-mounted Langmuir probes Halo current Rogowski coils –Around OH ground plane Plasma Current Rogowski Coils Flux Loops Diagnostics also to be installed for machine protection –Inside plasma-facing components Thermocouples –Around OH ground plane Thermocouples

NSTX Upgrade Project – Final Design Review June 22 - 24, 2011 Diagnostics design verified by past performance on NSTX 5 Sensors inside plasma-facing components –Mirnov/Pickup Coils Design unchanged – drawings complete and vendors identified –Themocouples Design unchanged – vendor identified –Tile-mounted Langmuir Probes Design unchanged – drawings complete (part of tile drawing set) –Halo current Rogowski Coils Length increased but design otherwise unchanged Sensors around OH ground plane –Themocouples Design unchanged – vendor identified –Rogowski coils Length increased but design otherwise unchanged – drawings complete and vendors identified –Flux loops Length increased but design otherwise unchanged – vendor identified

NSTX Upgrade Project – Final Design Review June 22 - 24, 2011 Recommendation to increase number of sensors accommodated in new divertor region layout 6 More temperature measurements requested due to higher anticipated divertor heat loads –Number of thermocouples (vertical bars) increased More halo current Rogowski coils to be installed in same region Four thermocouples in NSTX divertor region Twelve thermocouples in comparable NSTX-U divertor region

NSTX Upgrade Project – Final Design Review June 22 - 24, 2011 Recommendation to mitigate risk of thermocouple failure during bakeout to be addressed in installation procedure 7 New bakeout procedure developed and implemented after initial installation of thermocouples on NSTX center stack –Welded “beads” at tip of thermocouple leads pressed against tiles –Not meant to accommodate large currents flowing through center stack Solution is to install boron nitride insulator between bead & tile Original approach involved holding thermocouple bead against tile while high temperature adhesive sets New installation procedure includes attachment of insulator on thermocouple bead prior to insertion into tile Boron nitride insulator Thermocouple bead Thermocouple pocket in tile

NSTX Upgrade Project – Final Design Review June 22 - 24, 2011 Risks identified and addressed 8 Sensors have adequate space within plasma-facing components and can be distributed on center stack as required –Ability to accommodate required sensor distribution demonstrated in layout on center stack “Wireways” sufficient for sensor leads –Tile design includes “pockets” of adequate size for sensors Sensors satisfy high temperature requirements for installation inside plasma-facing components –Sensor material with lowest temperature rating is MACOR at 1000 o C Available vendors can meet cost and schedule requirements –Vendor regularly used by PPPL can fabricate sensor “mandrels” –Vendor that wound original sensors still available for NSTX-U sensors

NSTX Upgrade Project – Final Design Review June 22 - 24, 2011 Cost and schedule estimates do not require change 9 Tasks for Final Design Review complete –All fabrication drawings ready for issue to vendors and PPPL shops Procurement involves readily-available materials and duplication of components fabricated for NSTX –Commercial wire/cables are to be used and can be easily obtained by need date (June 2012) for shipment to sensor winding company –Mandrel fabrication by vender can be completed in 3 weeks ARO and can be performed in parallel with wire/cable procurement Themocouples and flux loops do not need mandrels –Winding by vendor can be completed in 12 weeks ARO and can be provided by need date for sensor installation April 2013 for vacuum-side sensors and June 2013 for air-side sensors Installation procedures are modifications to existing ones for NSTX and can be completed by need date (October 2012)
