3 What is the Ear? The ear is the part of the body on either side of the head. The ear is what allows us hear. Ears are made up of important part such as; outer ear, the ear drum, hammer, anvil, stirrup, cochlea. Ear are used to hear and help us balance. The ears help us balance as there is three parts next to the cochlea which help us balance. They feel the air and vibrations out side our body. Next Page Previous Page Menu

4 How does the ear work? The ear works very quick so messages can be sent to out brain. 1. First the sound vibration enters the ear. Our ears are slightly curved so that the sound gets caught. 2. The vibration hits the ear drum which the vibrations on to the hammer. 3. The hammer passes it on to the anvil. 4. The sound is then carried on to the stirrup. 5. Then finally the sound reaches the cochlea. 6. Hair in side the cochlea become electric and this sends an electrical message to the brain. Previous PageNext Page Menu

5 Parts of the Ear Ear Drum- A thin piece of skin that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. Hammer- It is a tiny bone next to the ear drum and it vibrates by the ear drum tapping it. Anvil- Another small bone next to the Hammer. It vibrates when the hammer knocks it. Stirrup- A part of the ear next to the Anvil that gives the noise to the cochlea. Cochlea- A spiral part of the ear that sends messages to the brain. Inside the spiral little hair stand. When a noise is made the hair become electric. Cochlea sends an electric message to the brain. 7 Sounds and Vibrations Sounds travel though molecules. This works like marbles. The first one will push the next one then that one will push the third one and so on. Speed of light is faster than speed of sound because of the distance away the noise came from. Depending on the surface the noise hits depends how strong it will reflex and where it will reflex.
