1 M V D Notes September 16, 2014

2 MASS Definition: Unit: grams (g) or kilograms (kg) Quantity of matter
a measure of the amount of "stuff" in something. Unit: grams (g) or kilograms (kg)

3 Mass (cont.) Mass is not measured in POUNDS--pounds are weight! (Weight is a force, but more about that later!)

4 Mass Measurement Tool Electronic balance

5 Volume How much space matter occupies Units: cm3 or ml 1 cm3 = 1 ml

6 Volume Measurement Tool #1
Ruler (measured in centimeters) Unit: cm3 (cm x cm x cm) V = L x W x H

7 Volume Measurement Tool #2
Water Displacement (unit: mL) Final Level Initial Level Volume (mL)

8 Density Density is mass per unit of volume.
Lead is (more or less) dense than styrofoam. A loaf of bread is (more or less) dense than a brick.

9 How to Calculate Density:
Density: D=m/v Units: g/mL or g/cm3 D =

10 Density The metric system was designed so that the density of water = 1 g/ cm3 or 1000 kg/m3 DH20 =1 g/cm3

11 Think about it! A rock from the moon fell in the parking lot at Skyview. To determine its density, a brilliant student measured its mass (10.0g) using an electronic scale and determined its volume (5.0 mL) using water displacement. What is the density of this moon rock?

12 Think about it! The mass of the rectangular prism below is 10 g. What is the density of the rectangular prism below? 3 cm 2 cm 4 cm
