Warm Up: 4/27 On your notebook titled, “Ocean Warm Ups,” complete the following tasks: 1.Title this section, “temperature layers” 2.Read pg. C79. 3.Describe the three layers of the Ocean water. 4.What two things cause the surface temperature of ocean water to vary?

Marine Food Web Practice: Choose one ocean ecosystem and make a food web to represent how energy is transferred among organisms in that region. Remember arrows show the way energy is being transferred! Your food web should include at least 6 organisms and should show what habitat you have chosen.

Review 4/27: (back of NB) Let’s see what you remember… 1.How much of the earth is covered in water? 2.Describe how freshwater can be found on earth? %s? 3.What is an estuary? 4.What are the three zones of the ocean? 5.Describe three ecosystems found in oceans?

On your page called, “Estuaries in NC” Read the section, “Fresh Water and Salt Water Meet on Coasts” page C116 to C118. Imagine you are an animal living in this area. Write one to two paragraphs describing what you might see, hear, smell and experience in an estuary.

Marine Technology Sonar: SOund Navigation And Ranging Determines the depth of the ocean Can be used to create a map of the ocean floor Remote Sensing option http://videos.howstuffwork s.com/hsw/9068- discovering-math- measuring-distance-and- depth-video.htm http://videos.howstuffwork s.com/hsw/9068- discovering-math- measuring-distance-and- depth-video.htm

How does Sonar Work? The ship sends out sound waves that bounce off the ocean floor and go back to the ship

Satellites Bounce microwaves off of the ocean surface Can be used to create a map of the ocean floor Remote Sensing option http://oceanexplorer.noaa.g ov/technology/tools/satellit es/satellites.html http://oceanexplorer.noaa.g ov/technology/tools/satellit es/satellites.html

Submersibles Small underwater craft used for deep sea research. Allow us to explore abyssal depths. Manned Submersibles, ROVs http://oceanexplorer.noaa.g ov/technology/subs/subs.ht ml http://oceanexplorer.noaa.g ov/technology/subs/subs.ht ml
