3 Metaphor O A comparison of two unlike things without using “like” or “as”. O Normally uses “is” or “are” O “Dawn with the fingertips of rose” (morning) O “…But he seemed rather a shaggy mountain.” (Polyphemus)

4 Personification O Giving human characteristics to nonhuman objects. O Example: “Death sat there huge.”

5 Hyperbole O An exaggeration O “Two dozen four-wheeled wagons, with heaving wagon teams, could not have stirred the tonnage of that rock…” (boulder)

6 Imagery O Language that appeals to the senses O “…while blood ran out around the red-hot bar. Eyelid and lash were seared; the pierced ball hissed broiling and the roots popped.”
