What can Destiny do for YOU?

Let’s take a look…

Destiny is the online catalog for the Jennie Smith Library

It can help you… Locate a book Get information about that book Find out if the book is in Let you know if another school in the District has the book

How do I find it?

You can access Destiny from any computer! Connect to the Internet In our library, that will take you right to the Jennie Smith Library Portal At other computers, enter this address: http://www.christina.k12.de.us/smith/library

This page gives you a lot of information about the library In the Links column is a listing of other sites that are very useful to people who use libraries

On the left hand side, you will see a link for Destiny. Click on it.

Click on the link for Smith Elementary School

Click on the tab that says “Catalog”

And you are ready to start using Destiny

How does it work?

Each book has a page of information about it. You access this page by searching the title, the author, or the subject, what the book is about

Let’s try it out…

Here we are at the catalog page. You want to access that book page we saw, but how do you find it?

This dialog box lets you type in the information you know You can enter the title of the book You can enter the author You can enter the subject, what the book is about

Type the cat in the hat in the dialog box It doesn’t matter if you use upper or lower case letters You DO have to remember to use a space between words Click on the Title button because that’s the information just entered

You get a list of the titles that contain the words you typed in.

Which one should you choose? 1.No, this contains the words we want, but it’s not the right one 2.No, this one is in a different language! 3.This looks like what we want!

Before we go on, let’s see what information we get from THIS page!

This icon tells you that this entry describes a book

Before we go on, let’s see what information we get from THIS page! Author’s name

Before we go on, let’s see what information we get from THIS page! Call number

Before we go on, let’s see what information we get from THIS page! The year the book was published is the copyright date

Before we go on, let’s see what information we get from THIS page! Status How many copies do we own? How many are available?

If all you needed was the call number, you’ve got it! Check to see that the book is available and if it is, copy down the call number and go get it!

But what if you need MORE?

If you move the cursor over the title, it turns blue and is underlined – it turned into a link! You can click on it or on the little sign that says “Details”

Either will take you to the book’s information page

Let’s see what we can find out about the book…

Some of the information is the same as we saw on the last page Book icon

But there’s more…

A short summary will tell you what the book is about.

These are called “tracings.” They tell you the subject headings the book can be found under

This tells you about the book you hold in your hand, the physical book

Place of publication, Publisher, and copyright date

Number of pages, is it illustrated? and size in centimeters

Book number – can be LCCN or ISBN or both

This tells you who the book is appropriate for and usually tells you a reading level and an interest level

And why is all that information important?

Suppose you’re doing a report and you forgot to write down all the information about the book you used to write the report…

Suppose your teacher assigns a book report, and the book has to be more than 75 pages…

Suppose a friend told you about a book, but you’re not sure if it’s on your level…

You can search using Destiny and find answers to all these problems…and more!
