CCD COP Rio Pavilion Special Event 15 October 2015 Chizuru Aoki GEF Secretariat Sustainable Development Goals and Synergy

SDGs: A Renewed Start for Our Planet

and GEF

SDGs and GEF Contributions Rooted in GEF’s role as financial mechanism for Rio Conventions and other MEAs Committed to help all actors deliver on SDGs Partnership of 183 countries 18 implementing agencies Tackling interdependent issues through integration Supporting projects with synergy and multiple benefits across GEF focal areas

Land as a central element SDG 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss 15.3: Land Degradation Neutrality Land agenda embodies the importance of tackling complex, interdependent issues in an integrated manner How we protect and manage land resources sustainably will have impacts on multiple goals

Seeking Synergy and Multiple Benefits Growing interest by countries in cross-cutting projects with multiple benefits 47 out of 74 land degradation projects (FY13-15) are multi-focal! $227 million from land degradation, $300 million from biodiversity, climate change, SFM, etc. 41 more projects addressing land agenda supported by funds for climate change (LDCF, SCCF, AF) $297 million from climate-related funds Synergy among Rio Conventions on the ground

Land, Water & Food Security At the heart of achieving many goals is the nexus of land, water, and food security The GEF supports sustainable land management to fight land degradation and multi-country cooperation on freshwater Coordinated management of 34 transboundary river basins in 78 countries Integrated Program on Food Security in Africa works in 12 countries and brings a holistic perspective to agriculture through sustainable management of land, water, soil and genetic resources

Climate Greenhouse gases are at an all time high and 2015 is on-track to be the hottest year ever: impacts on ecosystems and humans GEF supports countries to transform onto low emission development path & promote resilience and adaptation to the impacts of climate change Towards and beyond Paris: INDC support to 47 countries Mobilized $46 billion for climate finance Facilitating expansion of wind, solar and other renewable energy Supporting adaptation in LDCs and SIDS

Biodiversity Biodiversity has declined 60% since 1970 in tropical regions The GEF supports UNCBD through mainstreaming biodiversity into decision-making and expanding protected areas The GEF has supported over 3,300 protected areas and will continue to support the conservation of priority places both land and sea In response to the poaching crisis, the GEF has launched a multi-country program to strengthen legal frameworks, improve patrolling, and reduce demand

Forests 7.6 million hectares of forest are lost annually Forest stewardship is crucial to meeting the GEF’s goals for the UNFCCC, UNCCD, UNCBD, The GEF has supported 400 sustainable forest management projects – improved forest management, payments for ecosystem services, certification, community engagement Through the Amazon Regional Protected Areas Program (ARPA), Brazil has preserved 70 million hectares of rainforest through protected areas and sustainable use

Cities By 2050, 2 billion more people will live in cities Cities cause 70% of greenhouse gas emissions The GEF is bringing together local and global institutions to help city leaders strengthen urban planning, catalyze sustainability investments, and share knowledge Sustainable Cities Integrated program supports 23 cities in 11 developing countries in moving towards sustainable pathways through integrated urban management

Oceans More than 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal areas for livelihoods The GEF promotes a holistic and cooperative approach to ocean and sea management – bringing together diverse stakeholders The GEF is working in two-thirds of the world’s large marine ecosystems for cooperative management Coastal Fisheries Initiative - $250 million for communities, private sector, government to shift to a sustainable path
