3 Announcements Debates are next Tuesday! You need to come meet with me if you are debating! If you missed the quiz yesterday you must come after school to take it!

4 Why were there Race riots in the late 1960s?

5 Causes Civil Rights legislation was taking too long to pass. Even in places where there were laws, enforcement of equal rights was minimal in many parts of the country. African Americans were tired of waiting for things to change and grew frustrated with the inequality they faced on a daily basis.

6 Watts Riot Took place in Los Angles (1965). First of the Race Riots. Sparked by the arrest of a black motorist but frustration over discrimination kept many African Americans rioting for days. 20,000 members of the National Guard were sent in to restore peace, 20 people died.

7 Los Angeles Watts riot

8 Detroit Riot Riot started when police officers arrested 82 people in an African American part of the city. As they were waiting to be transported a crowd developed. After the police left, African Americans who were upset up them closing down the one place they had to go started rioting. National Guard was sent in within 48 hrs. After 5 days of rioting, 43 people lay dead, 1189 injured and over 7000 arrested.

10 Newark Riot The Newark Riot of 1967 began with the arrest of a cab driver He was stopped, interrogated, arrested and transported to the 4th precinct headquarters, during which time he was severely beaten by the arresting officers. A crowd gathered around the police station when they found out. National Guard was sent in after 48hrs but the violence got worse. The riot did not end for 6 days.

12 Compare You are going to draw a 3 circle venn diagram like the one on the board. You are going to compare the three riots. After you fill out the diagram, write down 3 long-term causes for each riot.

13 Newspaper Article You will write a newspaper article about 2 of the 3 riots we learned about today. Use the worksheet to help you write your article.
