Opening Activity Please take out your reading log and essay packet. I will stamp your packet if the evidence and refutations are completed. 1. What are the arguments discussed in your first 2 body paragraphs? 2. What are your 2 refutations in body paragraph 3?

Opening Activity Please take out your reading log and turn to body paragraphs 1 & 2. 1. What is a topic sentence? What are commentary sentences? 2. What is a “blah” word? (Turn to pg. 19 for help.)

Blah Words (pg. 19) Read over your paragraphs and circle any BLAH words. –What are some examples? that, whatever, stuff… –How can you change these words?

This class was to provide students with practical skills in outdoor recreation. It was always surprising, and sometimes it was shocking. It was highly successful for some students to learn about the industry. Boring verbs make for boring papers

This class provided students with practical skills in outdoor recreation. It surprised, and sometimes shocked. For some students, it succeeded in teaching them about the industry. Put Energy into your verbs

Parenthetical Citations At the end of each quote or paraphrased sentence, you must include a parenthetical citation. There are specific rules for citations. Please take notes on these rules.

Parenthetical Citations Author known: (last name pg. #) Author unknown: (complete title name pg. #) Page number unknown: (last name only), (title name only) Title unknown: (organization name)

Handling Quotes in Your Text Author’s last name and page number(s) of quote must appear in the text. Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263). Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263).

Quote Blending (pg. 16) What is wrong with this quote? “It’s the ultimate sign of disrespect.” Instead write... Davey D believes, “it’s the ultimate sign of disrespect” (1). How would you cite the following quote? “...turn it into something beautiful, something we can call our own.” –Mos Def, pg. 2 Mos Def demonstrates that we should “...turn it into something beautiful, something we can call our own” (2).

Remember: Spelling and grammar matter! There is no excuse for such errors.

Body Paragraphs 3 (pg.30) Take notes in the notes section of your journal. Topic Sentence –Introduce the counterargument. Evidence –Your quote should support your counterargument. Refutation –Idea proving why the counterargument is wrong. Closing Sentence –Wrap up your thoughts.

Example: Body Paragraph 3 Some people believe that racial profiling is good, because it helps law enforcement officials arrest terrorists and other criminals. Mayor Giuliani believes that “the stops are driven by the descriptions of the person who committed the crime” (2). I agree that an old lady probably will not be carrying a bomb at the airport, but I would rather search too many people than not enough. If only select people are targeted, how can we be sure that terrorists aren’t disguising themselves? The idea that terrorists can be stopped by the use of ethnic profiling is also wrong because it wastes valuable time and money. Officials will spend so much time searching out certain groups of people, that more money will need to be spent to retrace their missteps. My hope is that law-enforcement reconsider their implementation of racial profiling, for it only worsens criminal behavior.

Period 1 Task Finish all body paragraphs! All body paragraphs must be written by tomorrow. Tomorrow we will write the introduction and conclusion.

In-Class Log Task: What memory does the literature call to mind--of people, places, events, sights, smells, feelings or attitudes? Ex: This novel reminds me of my first experience dating a guy. The main character in my book suffered from a bad breakup and I also hurt when my boyfriend lied to me…

By tomorrow (Friday)… Reading Log All body paragraphs complete in the outline Prepared (with ideas) to write the introduction and conclusion

Body Paragraphs 1 & 2 (pg.30) Take notes in the notes section of your journal. Topic Sentence –Introduce main argument in the paragraph. Evidence –Make sure your evidence is persuasive and varied. Commentary –Explain why the quote supports your argument. Closing Sentence –Wrap up your thoughts. What do you want the reader to be left thinking about at the end of this paragraph?

Racial profiling discriminates against certain races and is therefore, wrong. Bob Herbert argues that “Most Americans have no idea of the extent of the race-based profiling that is carried out by law- enforcement officials and demoralizing effect it has on its victims” (10). When Blacks and Hispanics are cited by police due to their skin color, they are unjustly treated. This country was founded on the belief that all people are created equal, so what gives some cops the right to practice ethnic profiling? Herbert also highlights the point that most stops are not connected to any one crime but are, “arbitrary and unconscionable intrusions” (2). I find myself agreeing with this point. Police do stop citizens simply because of their skin color. The discrimination involved in racial profiling is definitely a bigger issue than many of us realize. Example: Body Paragraphs 1 & 2
