3. Mouth The function of the mouth and its associated structures:
Form a receptacle for food
Begin mechanical digestion through chewing (mastication)
Swallow food

Assist respiratory system in the passage of air

4. The Ear Organ for hearing and balance, it consists of three parts:
Outer Ear- collect and transmit sound
Middle Ear- collect and transmit sound
Inner Ear- analyzes sound waves and maintains the body’s balance

5. Heart Facts about the heart: Size of a fist
The heart is a pumping system which intakes deoxygenated blood through the veins, delivering it to the lungs for oxygenation and then pumping it into the various arteries to be transmitted to where it is needed throughout the body for energy.

6. Lungs Respiratory system mainly contained in two lungs
Air in which is inhaled through the mouth and nasal passages travels through the windpipe or “trachea” into two main air passages

Right lung make up of three compartments, which contain a branch and stem off into small “twigs” holding the air sacs that process the oxygen in the sir to be released into the blood and expel carbon dioxide which is exhaled through the nose and mouth
Left lung contains two sections and encloses the heart which processes the oxygenated blood into the lungs for exhalation

7. Brain Brain Stem- extension of spinal cord
The brain is a jelly-like substance, which in adults weighs about three pounds!
Divided into three parts:

Forebrain- consists mainly of cerebrum

8. Esophagus
Muscular tube which carries food and liquids from the throat to the stomach for digestion after it has been chewed and chemically softened in the mouth.
Food is forced downwards by powerful waves of muscle contractions
Rings of muscle at the top and bottom that contract after food passes through and enters the stomach

9. Stomach Several Functions:
A hallow, sac-like organ connected to the esophagus and the duodenum.
Several Functions:
Consist of layers of muscle and nerves that continue the breakdown of food which begins in the mouth
Average adult stomach stretches to hold from 2-3 pints and produces approximately the same amount of gastric juices every 24 hours
