Session aims To understand the definitions for the ‘axial skeleton’ and ‘appendicular skeleton.’ To identify the main bones of the skeleton and vertebrae To identify the 4 major types of bones

Appendicular skeleton The axial skeleton forms the main axis or core of your skeletal system, and provides the main area of support and protection for the body (Barker, et al, 2007) The axial skeleton consists of: – Skull – Thorax – Vertebral column

Appendicular skeleton This consists of the bones of the limbs, including; – Femur – Tibia and Fibula – Humerus – Girdles that join onto the – Ribs – Clavicle – Sternum – Patella – Pelvis – Vertebrae/spine

Types of bone Long (Humerus) Short (Trapezoid) Fat (Sternum) Irregular (Vertebrae)
