PILGRIMS LANDED AT PLYMOUTH ROCK SIGNED THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT BEFORE THEY GOT OFF THE BOAT. AGREEMENT FOR SELF- GOVERNMENT--TO LIVE IN A COVENANT COMMUNITY- BY GOD’S LAWS.

Written and signed before the Pilgrims disembarked from the ship. Not a constitution, but an agreement to form a crude govt. and submit to majority rule. Signed by 41 adult males. Led to adult male settlers meeting in assemblies to make laws in town meetings.

IN PURITAN NEW ENGLAND SOCIETY THE MOST POWERFUL MEMBERS OF SOCIETY WERE CHURCH MEMBERS ENTIRE FAMILIES CAME TO THE NEW WORLD STABLE SOCIETY

NOT A PURITAN? GET OUT! EVEN THOUGH THE PURITANS CAME TO THE NEW WORLD FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM---THEY DID NOT WANT OTHERS TO HAVE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM! PURITANS HAD NO TOLERATION FOR OTHER RELIGIONS!

DISSENTERS NOT EVERYONE THOUGHT THAT THE PURITANS WERE RIGHT. PEOPLE WHO DISAGREED WITH THEM WERE CALLED DISSENTERS. ONE DISSENTER WAS ROGER WILLIAMS. THE PURITANS DID NOT LIKE WILLIAMS.

ROGER WILLIAMS WILLIAMS CAUSED SO MUCH CONTROVERSY THAT THE PURITANS WANTED HIM GONE! HE ESCAPED MASSACHUSETTS AND WENT TO LIVE WITH THE INDIANS- HE STARTED HIS OWN COLONY….RHODE ISLAND.

ECONOMY BECAUSE OF THE LONG WINTERS AND ROCKY SOIL, PLANTATION AGRICULTURE WAS NOT POSSIBLE IN NEW ENGLAND COLONIES. SO NO PLANTATIONS---- THEREFORE THEY DID NOT NEED SLAVES!

SMALL FARMS (SUBSISTENCE) SHIPBUILDING FISHING AND CARRYING STUFF ON SHIPS FOR OTHER PEOPLE- THAT’S HOW NEW ENGLAND COLONISTS MADE A LIVING!
