How Can We Describe Motion of an Object?
3
Scalar vs Vector Quantities Scalar – described by a magnitude (number value) alone –Example: 5m, 13 miles, 20 degrees Celsius Vector – described by BOTH magnitude and direction –Example: 30 m/sec, East; 21 miles, North
4
Distance vs Displacement Distance – how much ground an object has covered (scalar) Displacement – how out of place an object is OR how far an object is from its starting point (vector) Ex: A physics teacher walks 4 meters East, 2 meters South, 4 meters West, and finally 2 meters North.
5
Just checking… Determine the resulting displacement and the distance traveled by the skier during these three minutes.
6
And another one… A wound-up football coach paces the sidelines during an intense game. What is his distance traveled and displacement?
