2 Agenda K-3 Literacy Initiative Data Collection on Military Students School Performance Grades CPR Certification as Graduation Requirement Revisions to Elementary Licensure

3 K-3 Literacy Initiative By 2013 – 2014, all districts must be using mClass: Reading 3D for diagnostic and formative assessment LEAs choose when to begin implementation By start of 2013 – 2014, all training must be completed State funding for devices and licenses

4 K-3 Literacy Initiative Third grade retention policy effective with 2013 – 2014 school year Retained third graders must attend LEA-run summer reading camp; summer camps must first be offered in Summer 2014 Third graders who are not proficient after summer reading camp must be placed in transitional fourth grade classrooms; requirement begins 2014 – 2015 school year

5 Data Collection on Military Students One-time requirement to report on the number of students with an immediate family member who has served in the Armed Forces since September 1, 2001 School principals enter number of students in web application LEA testing directors/coordinators ensure that all principals have entered data

6 Data Collection on Military Students LEAs must also respond to questions about staff capacity to support the unique needs of students with immediate family members in the military Web application opens September 15, 2012 and closes October 15, 2012 Sample parent letter sent out from NCDPI

7 School Performance Grades Required grade of A-F for each school in NC For high schools, grades determined by: –Percent of students scoring proficient on the English II, Algebra I/Integrated Mathematics I, and Biology End-of-Course assessments –Percent of students who demonstrate workplace readiness on WorkKeys –Percent of students who demonstrate college readiness on the ACT –Percent of students who graduate within four years of entering high school –Percent of students who take and pass a higher-level mathematics course (Algebra II or Integrated Mathematics III)

8 School Performance Grades For elementary and middle schools, grades determined by: –Percent of students scoring proficient on English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science End-of-Grade assessments General Assembly intends to include growth in performance grades Legislature will approve final grading process in session beginning January 2013

9 CPR Certification as Graduation Requirement CPR certification required to graduate Certification should take place as part of grade 8 Healthful Living class High schools need to screen students to ensure requirement has been met Certification must be entered into new field in Student Information System (SIS) Requirement begins in 2014 - 2015

10 Elementary Licensure Revise Coursework/Competencies in Reading and Mathematics Review required assessments (replacing Praxis with Massachusetts tests for licensure) Use technology-based formative assessments (Reading 3D) Integrate Arts into curriculum
